Fireworks and independence...
Today while New York was humming with patriotism and debauchery, which seem to go hand and hand to my average American, I sat alone in my apartment making fruit salad. Just so you don't doubt my own respect for my nation I used red, white, and blue fruit. Well yellow ok. Away from the fruit, which was delicious, a friend called to remind me of the fireworks. So half interested I walked out to my roof, alone, and watched them. I notice that I could see hundreds of people on roofs with their friends enjoy the amazing display..And it was beautiful. With all the beauty around me I couldn't help but wonder about the meaning of this massive show of wealth and carelessness. My understanding of fireworks is although they were created in a kitchen in China out of pure mistake, we use them to signify the rockets we used to glory...We are at WAR!! My friends are in Iraq watching deadly "fireworks", "the rockets red glare" is so terribly real to them. And here I am with the rest of America celebrating our independence. I just want to ask from what are we independent? It can't be fear, no we have a national color system to make sure we never forget to be afraid. Are we of independent thought? Fuck no. At least our media system is trying hard to make sure we try and think like the masses or that we believe we do. I flip through the papers and the headline involves hmmm.....Let's see A RUNAWAY BRIDE for a full week...What?!? We are at war. No no I'm sorry because an "oil rancher" in Texas said we aren't we must not be, it must be that thousand of young men from the ghettos and farms in America all unilaterally decided to holiday in Iraq just for the hell of it.
Well at least we have our health. Oh wait no no we don't have our health either.
I could go on...but I'm beginning to scare myself.
Oh wait I know we are completely independent from the ethics of any other country.
Oh yay! Happy 4th!
